It can be difficult to combat hate crimes, as it is hard to change someone’s mind on issues like prejudice and intolerance. However, it is important to keep yourself and your family safe, especially from hate crimes.
To protect your family from hate crimes, make sure you have a full understanding of the neighborhood that you will be living in. Look up crime statistics and try to get an idea of any racial tensions or similar intolerance that is going on in the neighborhood. Look for areas that have a lot of diversity and low crime; these areas exemplify areas that have acceptance for differences.
You can also help prevents hate crimes from occurring by teaching and demonstrating tolerance. Teach your children not to judge others for their difference, and live by this example. Do not follow stereotypes and do not make assumptions on others based on things like race or religion. These steps can help the intolerance that fuels hate crimes from forming.
